Happy times

It’s been a pretty evenful few days.

Friday I had my last day of orientation classes, then I headed home for a nap. Next an the agenda was Jack’s, naturally. I was going to go around eight or nine, but I got bored and went at seven. By myself.

At Jack’s, I was befriended by two random older gentlemen who were odd, but were buying me shots. I did a shot of tequila rose at 7:45 and my bartender looked at me and said “Tequila at 7:45? It’s going to be a good night for you, Jen.”

Shortly after this, Julie Gong came in and punched me in the back. We did the “How are you?” thing and, sadly, we were both still sober. So we parted ways to rectify that.

About two hours later when my friends who were supposed to meet me at eight finally showed up, I was pretty ripped and having a blast. I stopped drinking since I had to drive in less than two hours. Then someone kept buying me beer, which I didn’t want. But my bartender said “Jen, it’s free, just drink it.” I sipped it, then ran around the bar like a moron before heading home.

Saturday, I slept til noon. Then I went to the Mocha for 9 hours and studied. Mostly this was because I didn’t want Sunday to come because Sunday was my first day in the unit and I was freaking out like you would not believe.

I finally went to bed at midnight and worked twelve hours yesterday. And I loved it. LOVED it. I am so happy with this decision, I wasn’t scared, I wasn’t over confident, I got along well with my preceptor. It was great.

I had to celebrate last night since I was off today, and I needed to celebrate with someone who understands nursing stuff, so I called Amy and she was at Jack’s. So I went there, in my ugly scrubs, and talked about my wonderful, fabulous day. In the process, I drank a bit too much and ended up having to sit and drink water for an hour after Amy left.

Today, I slept in and headed to the Mocha again, and I’ve been here since two. At eight, I’m going back to Jack’s. I am so predictable. But I’m happy. Finally.

I think that many of your readers are glad that you are enjoying your new profession. Congratulations! I am curious about your preceptor. Do all new nurses have a preceptor working with them? How long will the preceptor work with you? How many hours did your preceptor work you on your last shift? Was she working with you the entire time?
